Fragrance oil is a manufactured raw material. It is not a natural product, not a perfume, and not the same thing as an essential oil, although it is frequently confused with both. Understanding what fragrance oil actually is, physically and chemically, is the foundation for every decision you will make downstream — which oil to buy, how much to use, what carrier to put it in, how to price it, and how to troubleshoot when a product fails. What Fragrance Oil Actually Is
At its most basic, fragrance oil is a concentrated blend of aromatic chemical compounds dissolved in a carrier solvent. The aromatic compounds are what give the oil its smell. The carrier — typically a solvent like dipropylene glycol (DPG), triethyl citrate, or isopropyl myristate — serves several functions: it keeps the aromatic compounds in solution, dilutes them to a manageable concentration, and makes the oil easier to handle and measure. The carrier is not "filler" in the pejorative sense; it is a functional component that affects solubility, viscosity, flash point, and how the oil performs in your product base.
The aromatic compounds themselves fall into two broad families: natural isolates and synthetic aroma chemicals.
