A fountain or pond is a system. It moves water, filters it, sometimes heats it, and usually displays it. When one works well, the mechanism is invisible—you see only water in motion or at rest, clear, well-kept, sometimes home to plants or fish. When one fails, the failure is very visible: algae blooms overnight, a pump cavitates and burns out, water leaks into landscape soil, or the system simply stops circulating and water grows stagnant within days.

Most people treat fountains and ponds as decorative objects—something you buy, install, and expect to work. Professionals, contractors, and serious hobbyists who maintain them, however, know better. A fountain that fails after one season or a pond that turns opaque mid-summer rarely does so by accident. It fails because the system was undersized, installed incorrectly, or maintained poorly. All three errors are preventable if you understand what you are actually building.

What a Fountain or Pond Actually Is

A fountain is a recirculating water feature. Water is drawn from a basin or reservoir by a pump, pushed through a nozzle or spillway, and falls back into the basin to be pumped again. The cycle repeats continuously. A pond is either static (water does not recirculate; it only evaporates or is manually topped off) or dynamic (water is filtered and/or circulated to maintain clarity and health).
