Chapter 1: Understanding Forestry & Logging
Forestry and logging are not synonymous. Forestry is the science and practice of managing forests for long-term health, productivity, and value. Logging is the work of harvesting timber—the industrial extraction of trees. The two are related but distinct. A well-managed forest involves selective harvesting, disease management, reforestation, and decades of stewardship. A logging operation extracts timber as efficiently as possible within the constraints set by law, market demand, and the forest's condition. This handbook addresses logging as work—what it entails, how it's structured, what it costs, and how to do it properly. But it cannot be separated from forestry, because how you log determines whether a forest regenerates, erodes, or becomes economically worthless.
The scale of forestry and logging is enormous. Globally, roughly 15 billion trees are cut annually. The United States alone harvests around 350 million tons of timber per year. A single large logging operation in the Pacific Northwest might fell 50,000 to 100,000 trees in a season. A small family-owned woodlot in the Northeast might harvest 200 cords (a cord being 128 cubic feet of stacked wood) every few years to pay property taxes and fund selective improvement of the stand. Logging is a core economic activity in rural America, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, and the tropics. It employs hundreds of thousands of people directly and millions more in downstream industries—sawmills, paper plants, engineered wood manufacturers, and construction suppliers. For many rural communities, forestry is the largest or second-largest employer.
