Food wraps are a mechanism for extending shelf life and preventing contamination by creating a barrier between food and its environment. They seem simple because they are ubiquitous—plastic cling film on a takeout container, foil over a baking dish, parchment under baked goods—but their actual function is precise: to slow or prevent the movement of water vapor and oxygen into or out of stored food, and to block physical and microbial contamination from outside.
Understanding why this matters requires understanding what happens to food when it is exposed to air and moisture loss. When cooked chicken is placed in a commercial refrigerator without wrapping, water begins to evaporate from its surface within minutes. This process is continuous and accelerates with air circulation. After eight hours, the surface becomes noticeably drier. After 24 hours, the exterior has developed a leathery texture, and moisture loss has penetrated deeper into the meat. The chicken has not spoiled—the temperature is safe—but its texture, flavor, and market value have degraded. A proper wrap slows this process dramatically. The same chicken, wrapped tightly in the right material, will retain moisture and quality for 3-5 days instead of degrading in 24 hours. This is not preservation in the food-safety sense; refrigeration provides that. This is quality preservation, and it is the primary job of most food wraps.
