Foam board exists because a specific practical problem needed solving: how to create a rigid, lightweight, low-cost surface for mounting, backing, or displaying materials without the weight of plywood, the fragility of cardboard, or the expense of solid wood or metal. A sheet of foam board weighs a fraction of plywood at the same thickness, can be cut with a utility knife instead of power tools, and costs less than finish-grade lumber while delivering a professional appearance. What Foam Board Actually Is
