A flute is a woodwind instrument that produces sound by directing air across an opening in a tube, causing the air column inside to vibrate at specific frequencies. The player controls which frequencies sound by opening and closing key mechanisms that change the effective length of the vibrating air column. Unlike instruments with reeds—such as clarinets or oboes—flutes have no moving part in their sound-generating mechanism; the sound emerges purely from the interaction between the player's breath and the instrument's bore (the interior shape and diameter of the tube). This difference has profound practical consequences: flutes are mechanically simpler than reed instruments, but they are also more sensitive to the player's embouchure technique and to small changes in air temperature, humidity, and pressure.
Understanding how a flute works requires grasping three foundational elements: the bore, the tone holes, and the key mechanism. These interact to determine how an instrument plays, how long it lasts, and what it costs to own and maintain.
The Bore: Why Interior Geometry Matters
The bore is the interior shape of the flute's body. It is not a simple cylinder. A professional flute typically has a bore that tapers slightly—wider at the headjoint (the tube section you blow into), gradually narrower toward the foot (the lowest end). The diameter of the bore, measured in millimeters, is one of the most consequential specifications on a flute. A typical student flute has a bore diameter around 19.0 mm; a professional flute might be 19.2
