Chapter 1: Understanding Flowers
A flower is a living reproductive structure designed to produce seeds and fruit. But in the context of this handbook—where flowers function as a commercial product, a design element, or a cultivation subject—the definition matters for one practical reason: flowers age and die in measurable, predictable ways, and understanding how that happens is the foundation for every decision you'll make as a grower, buyer, seller, or handler.
Start with the basic anatomy. A typical flower consists of four concentric layers of modified leaves. The outermost are sepals—usually green, leaf-like, and protective. Inside are petals—the visible, colored parts that attract pollinators and, in commercial floristry, are what you're actually selling. In the center are the reproductive organs: stamens (male, producing pollen) and a pistil (female, containing the ovary). This structure isn't arbitrary. The petals are programmed to open, display color and fragrance, and eventually age and drop once their job—attracting pollinators—is complete. The stem is a tube of vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) that transports water and nutrients up from the roots and carbohydrates down from the leaves. Understanding this structure matters because it explains, for example, why flowers wilt when that vascular system is blocked by an air bubble, and why cut flowers need their stems re-cut at an angle to maximize the area available for water uptake.
The life cycle of a flower follows a pattern called senescence—the biological aging process. Once a flower opens, it enters a series of changes: the
