Early floppy disks (5.25-inch format, introduced in 1976) were genuinely flexible and bent easily; later 3.5-inch disks, introduced in the 1980s, were stiffer but retained the name. Today, when professionals refer to a "floppy drive," they almost always mean a 3.5-inch 1.44 megabyte drive, the dominant format from the 1990s onward, unless context specifies otherwise. A 3.5-inch floppy disk is a rigid plastic cartridge approximately 3.5 inches wide, 2.4 inches tall, and 0.25 inches thick, containing a circular magnetic medium (the actual disk) rotating inside a protective jacket. The disk itself measures 90 millimeters across and spins at 300 revolutions per minute during operation.
