Floor protection films and runners are temporary shielding systems designed to prevent damage to finished flooring surfaces during construction, renovation, painting, moving, or periods of intense foot traffic. They are not permanent finishes or underlayments. They are sacrificial layers, engineered to absorb scuffs, scrapes, paint drips, dust, and spills, and then be removed cleanly, leaving the original floor intact. This simple concept is the foundation of a multi-million-dollar industry that saves billions in repair and replacement costs annually. To use these products effectively, you must understand what they are made of, how they adhere, and where they are best deployed.
The core of most film products is a thin polymer sheet, most commonly low-density polyethylene (LDPE). This material is chosen for its balance of flexibility, tear resistance, and cost. The film's primary job is to act as a physical barrier. A 1-mil (0.001 inch) thick film can prevent a scuff from a work boot, but a 6-mil (0.006 inch) film might be required to withstand the point load of a ladder leg. The thickness, alongside the polymer density, dictates the film's tensile strength and puncture resistance. A high-traffic construction corridor requires a heavier film or a runner with a fabric reinforcement, while a light-duty, short-duration paint job in a bedroom may only need a thin film to catch overspray and dust.
