Chapter 1: Understanding Floats

A float is a flat-surfaced hand tool or machine that slides across wet concrete or mortar to compress, densify, and smooth the surface. In its simplest form, it is a rectangular platform—usually 3 to 4 feet long and 12 to 18 inches wide for hand tools—with a handle and a work surface made of wood, metal, or magnesium alloy. A mason or finisher pushes or pulls the float across freshly set concrete or mortar in controlled strokes, and in that moment of contact, physical and chemical work happens at the surface that will determine how the material looks, performs, and weathers for years.

Most people who don't work in masonry or concrete finishing see floats as interchangeable—a tool is a tool. In practice, floats are among the most consequential decisions a finisher makes on any job. The choice of float type, timing of application, technique, and surface material all directly control whether the finished concrete will be slip-resistant or slippery, durable or prone to dusting, visually consistent or marred by trowel marks, and whether it will shed water or absorb it in ways that cause staining or freeze-thaw damage. Understanding what a float does to concrete and mortar is the foundation for using one deliberately rather than by habit.
