What Fishing Lines and Leaders Are
A fishing line is a cord or filament, typically between 0.006 and 0.050 inches in diameter, spooled onto a reel and cast into water to present a lure or bait and ultimately to connect with a fish. A leader is a shorter section of line, typically 18 inches to 10 feet long, tied to the main line's end and often made from a different material. The leader serves as the final connection point to your lure or hook.
The main line carries the weight of casting, absorbs the friction of guides on a rod, sits in the water where it may be visible to fish or abraded by rocks and structures, and must hold its strength over weeks or months of use.
