A fishing hook is a single piece of sharpened wire, bent into a shape designed to penetrate a fish's mouth, lodge in tissue, and hold through the struggle of landing. It sounds simpleโand mechanically it is. But the hook's effectiveness depends on decisions about wire diameter, point angle, barb placement, eye design, and material composition. These specifications directly determine whether a fish stays hooked or escapes, whether the hook corrodes in saltwater, whether it holds when you apply pressure on the line, and how much you will spend to replace bent or dulled hooks. How a Hook Penetrates
A fishing hook works by converting the momentum of a fish's strike (or a deliberate hookset by the angler) into penetrating force concentrated at a sharp point. When a fish strikes bait on a hook, its momentum drives that point into the tissue of its mouth or jaw. The angle of the point matters enormously: a point ground to 10-15 degrees creates a fine edge that penetrates easily with minimal force, while a point dulled to 30 degrees or more will bounce off or bend rather than embed.
