In practice, a fish finder is two integrated systems working together. The transducer is the sonar transmitter and receiver—a piezoelectric device that converts electrical signals into acoustic pulses, sends them into the water, listens for returning echoes, and converts those echoes back into electrical signals. The display unit is an electronics package that generates the electrical pulses, amplifies the returning signals, processes the data, and renders it as an image on a screen. Neither works without the other. A transducer submerged in water with no display unit generates no useful information. A display unit sitting on a boat with no transducer in the water is useless.
