The Nature of Pyrotechnic Devices

Fireworks and firecrackers are, at their core, precision instruments built around controlled chemical reactions. They are a combination of fuels, oxidizers, binders, and color-producing metal salts, carefully packed into paper, plastic, or cardboard matrices. When you light a fuse or send an electronic igniter pulse, you are initiating a rapid oxidation reaction that produces heat, light, sound, and gas. Understanding fireworks professionally means moving past the spectacle and understanding these reactions as engineering problems: how to create pressure, how to time a delay, and how to convert chemical energy into the exact choreography you want in the sky.

The fundamental division runs between fireworks intended for consumers and those intended for professional display. Consumer fireworks, sparklers, firecrackers, roman candles, and small cakes, are classified by the US Department of Transportation (and the UN) as 1.4G. They contain a limited quantity of pyrotechnic composition, typically between 1 and 500 grams of flash powder or lift charge. Their power is intentional but strictly controlled to be safe for use by untrained individuals from the ground. Professional fireworks are 1.3G and often contain unsafely large amounts of pyrotechnic material, requiring licensed operators, dedicated mortars, and a legal permit for the venue where they will be displayed. A 1.4G firecracker has a report (the "bang") measured in a few grams of flash powder, while a 1.3G 12-inch display shell can have a burst charge of more than 500 grams of a high-powered composite.
