A fire sprinkler does one job: sense heat and spray water downward. That simplicity is deceptive. Understanding what a sprinkler actually doesโ€”and what it does not doโ€”is the foundation for every decision you'll make about designing, installing, maintaining, or troubleshooting a fire sprinkler system.

What a Fire Sprinkler Is

A fire sprinkler head is a heat-sensitive valve held closed by a mechanical link. When the surrounding air reaches a specific temperature, that link fails, the valve opens, and water discharges. That is the entire mechanism. There is no electrical control, no alarm signal, no remote activation. The sprinkler responds to heat alone.

The name "sprinkler" itself is slightly misleading. When a sprinkler opens, it does not spray a fine mist over a room. It discharges a directed stream or cone of water centered under the head, wetting the area directly below and around it. A typical residential sprinkler distributes water at roughly 15-20 gallons per minute; a large commercial head can flow 100+ gallons per minute. The water comes from a pressurized pipe system connected to a building's water supply or a storage tank.

The sprinkler is part of a larger system: a network of pipes, pumps, alarms, check valves, and pressure gauges designed to deliver water through sprinkler heads when a fire starts.
