Chapter 1: Understanding Fire Extinguishers
A fire extinguisher is a pressurized vessel containing an agent—water, foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide, or a halogenated compound—designed to discharge that agent onto a fire in a controlled manner to suppress it. But this simple definition obscures the real work of the device: fire extinguishers interrupt one or more of the conditions necessary for combustion to continue. To use one effectively, you need to understand what those conditions are, which agents interrupt them, and critically, when an extinguisher is the right tool and when evacuation is.
The Fire Triangle and How Extinguishers Work
Combustion requires three elements: fuel, oxygen, and heat. Remove any one, and the fire stops. This principle—often called the fire triangle—is the foundation of how every extinguisher operates. Different agents work by targeting different sides of this triangle, and understanding which agent targets which element will tell you immediately whether an extinguisher is suited to your fire risk.
Water-based extinguishers cool the fuel below its ignition temperature while also displacing oxygen near the burning material. A water extinguisher will work on most common fires involving paper, wood, textiles, and plastics—what fire professionals call Class A fires. But water conducts electricity, so it is dangerous on electrical fires (Class C), and it can actually worsen fires involving flammable liquids (Class B) by causing the liquid to splash and spread. This is why you cannot simply use one extinguisher everywhere in your building.
