A field hockey stick is a single-piece or composite tool designed to strike, control, and pass a ball across a playing surface. At first glance, it looks simple: a shaft with a flat or slightly curved head at one end, weighing between 12 and 16 ounces, and ranging from 32 to 37 inches in length depending on the player. But a stick's actual design involves material composition, weight distribution, head geometry, and stiffness characteristics that directly affect how a player controls the ball, passes accurately, and shoots with power. Understanding a field hockey stick means understanding these dimensions and why they matter in real play.
The basic anatomy of any field hockey stick consists of three functional parts: the shaft, the head, and the handle. The shaft is the long body of the stick that connects to the head and provides the primary striking surface. The head is the flat or slightly curved portion that contacts the ball directly—typically 2.5 to 3 inches wide and curved along its length. The handle is the top portion where a player grips, usually finished with a grip wrap or cushioning material. All three parts work together as a system.
