Chapter 1: Understanding Fertilizers
Fertilizer is plant food, but that simple phrase hides a working system that most gardeners and landscape professionals never fully understand. You may think of fertilizer as a bag of granules you spread on your lawn in spring, or a bottle of liquid you mix and pour on your garden beds. In reality, fertilizer is a material containing nutrients in forms that plants can absorb and use to grow, and understanding how that system works—what goes into soil, how it becomes available to roots, and what plants actually pull from it—is the foundation for making smart fertilizer decisions and avoiding expensive mistakes.
Start with what plants need. All plants require carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, which they get from air and water. Everything else—the nutrients that must come from soil—falls into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are needed in large quantities and are usually what fertilizer labels focus on. The three primary macronutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), abbreviated as NPK. Plants also need secondary macronutrients—calcium, magnesium, and sulfur—which often are present in adequate amounts in natural soil or are added separately. Micronutrients—iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, and molybdenum—are needed in smaller quantities but are equally essential. If any single nutrient is scarce, plant growth slows or stops, regardless of how much of the other nutrients are present. This is called Liebig's Law of the Minimum, and it's the reason a soil test matters: you need to know which nutrient is actually limiting
