Chapter 1: Understanding Fencing
Fencing is a structural system designed to enclose, define, or secure a space using vertical posts anchored in the ground and horizontal or vertical infill materials that span between them. It sounds straightforward—and in principle it is—but the gap between a fence that lasts thirty years and one that fails in five is not visible at installation. It lies in material properties you cannot see, soil depth you cannot observe after the fact, and maintenance you may never perform.
Fencing is among the longest-lasting investments in property. A roof may last twenty years; a fence, installed and maintained correctly, can last three decades or more. Yet it is often chosen on cost alone, without understanding what you are actually buying, how climate and soil affect performance, what maintenance it requires, or how installation quality becomes invisible but determines longevity. This chapter establishes what fencing actually is, how it works structurally, what makes one fence fail while another endures, and why the decisions you make at specification and installation become built into the fence for years.
The Basic System
All fences work the same way structurally, regardless of material. Vertical posts are installed in the ground at regular intervals—typically 4 to 8 feet apart. These posts carry vertical loads (the weight of the infill material, snow accumulation, wind pressure) and resist lateral movement. Horizontal rails or stringers connect the posts, distributing loads and providing structural continuity. Infill material—wood boards, vinyl panels, metal mesh, composite slats, or stone—hangs
