Fencing protective gear exists to prevent injury from a weapon. In foil and épée, the weapon's point travels at speeds exceeding 40 miles per hour. In sabre, a blade edge moves nearly as fast. Without protection, a direct hit causes puncture wounds, lacerations, and blunt trauma. Protective gear is the engineered barrier between an athlete's body and injury.

Understanding what this gear is, how it works, and why different pieces exist requires moving past the idea that it's simply "athletic clothing." A fencing jacket is not a heavy shirt. A mask is not a cage. A plastron is not optional reinforcement. Each piece serves a specific protective function, built from materials chosen for their ability to resist puncture, absorb impact, and allow athletes to move and breathe during intense physical activity.

What Fencing Protective Gear Actually Covers

A complete set of fencing protective gear consists of six main pieces: jacket, plastron, glove, mask, breeches, and socks. Most athletes add undergarments—an undershirt and compression shorts—though these are not part of the official protective kit.

The jacket covers the torso, shoulders, and upper arms. In foil and épée, valid target areas (the front and back of the torso, not the limbs or head) require heavy fabric and padding. In sabre, where the target includes the head, neck, and sword arm, jacket construction differs.
