A fencing mask is the single most important piece of safety equipment in the sport. It protects the most vulnerable part of your body - the face, head, and neck - from the primary attack in fencing: the point or edge of a steel blade traveling at high speed. It is also a piece of scoring equipment in modern electric fencing. At its most basic level, a fencing mask is a rigid, form-fitting wire mesh cage that covers the entire face and skull, down to the collarbone. It is the direct descendant of the heavy, rigid helmets and face guards used by military and dueling instructors in the 18th and 19th centuries to protect students during practice. Those early protective devices were heavy, poorly ventilated, and often limited vision. The modern mask you see today is the result of over a century of evolution focused on three conflicting priorities: maximizing protection against puncture, maximizing visibility, and minimizing weight to preserve head mobility and reduce fatigue.
