Feminine pads are engineered absorbent products designed to contain menstrual fluid by drawing liquid away from the skin and into internal layers where it is trapped. To understand why product selection matters and how to use pads effectively, you need to know how they actually work—not as a marketing message, but as a system of materials and construction designed to handle specific physical tasks.

At their core, feminine pads solve a real biological problem: menstruation typically produces 30 to 40 milliliters of fluid over the course of a period, with peak flow on days two and three. That fluid is not pure blood; it also contains tissue, bacteria, and hormonal compounds. A pad must absorb this fluid quickly, contain it without leaking, minimize odor, and allow enough air circulation to prevent skin irritation. These are engineering constraints, not lifestyle accessories. How well a pad meets these constraints determines whether it actually works.

The Basic Structure

All disposable feminine pads share a common internal architecture, though the materials and thicknesses vary significantly. The top surface layer—called the acquisition layer—is typically made from nonwoven fabric, usually polypropylene or a polypropylene blend. This layer is designed to feel soft and to allow liquid to pass through it quickly. The speed at which liquid moves through this layer is called wicking, and it matters: if the top layer absorbs liquid too slowly, fluid pools on the surface and can leak sideways or create discomfort.
