Needle felting is a process of controlled, repetitive stabbing. A barbed needle is pushed into a mass of loose fiber, and those barbs catch and tangle the individual filaments, compacting them into a solid shape. It is a simple concept, but its success depends on a specific physical event: the fiber must compress and then stay in place. If you try to felt a piece of wool directly on a granite countertop, the needle will either bend or snap on impact, and the fiber will have no room to interlock. If you try it on a soft mattress, the fiber will simply be pushed down into the foam, never reaching the required density. The felting pad or mat is the engineered intermediary that makes the process possible.
