Chapter 1: Understanding Felting Molds
Felting is the process of interlocking wool and other animal fibers into a dense, non-woven fabric. You can do this in two primary ways: wet felting, which uses heat, water, and agitation to cause the microscopic scales on the fibers to open and then lock together, and needle felting, which uses barbed needles to mechanically tangle the fibers. In both processes, the goal is often to create a flat piece of felt. But for a huge range of products--hats, bags, slippers, decorative vessels, and even components for larger textile pieces--you need a three-dimensional shape. This is where a felting mold becomes an indispensable tool. A felting mold is simply a physical form around which you shape the fibers during the felting process. It defines the final shape and size of the felted object. Without one, you are left to felt a flat piece and then shape it, a process that is time-consuming, imprecise, and often leads to inconsistent results.
The most basic function of a mold is to provide a three-dimensional armature. Consider a simple wet-felted hat. You begin with a loose arrangement of wool fibers, called a batt or a roving. To make a hat without a mold, you would have to lay the wool out flat, felt it, and then attempt to shape it. Shrinking during the felting process would distort the shape, and you would have to do a lot of hand-shaping and potentially sewing to get a result that looks intentional.
