An eyeglass lens is a piece of transparent material shaped and finished to bend light in a specific way so that it focuses correctly on the retina of the eye. That simple description—a piece of material that bends light—is true but incomplete. In practice, a lens is the result of choices: what material it's made from, how it's cut and shaped, what coatings or treatments are applied to it, and how precisely it aligns with the wearer's eye and frame. Each of these choices affects how well the lens actually works, how comfortable it is to wear, how durable it is, and how much it costs. How Lenses Work: Refraction and Focal Power

Light travels in straight lines until it hits a material with a different refractive index—a measure of how much that material slows light down. When light enters a lens material at an angle, it bends. This bending is called refraction. The amount of bending depends on two things: the refractive index of the material and the shape of the lens surface.

A converging lens (plus or convex lens) bends light rays inward so that they meet at a point. This is what a person with myopia (nearsightedness) needs—their eye focuses light too far forward, so a minus lens spreads light rays outward to compensate. A person with hyperopia (farsightedness) needs a plus lens to converge light.
