Unlike running on pavement or pushing through resistance on a stair climber, the exercise bike absorbs impact through its frame and drivetrain, placing minimal stress on knees, ankles, and hips—a fact that explains its presence in physical therapy clinics alongside commercial gyms.
The basic architecture of every exercise bike is consistent: a frame that supports a seated rider, a pedal crank assembly that the rider propels, some form of resistance that opposes the pedal rotation, and typically a console or display that measures and reports data back to the user. Within that simple structure, however, lie variations in materials, resistance type, electronic sophistication, and durability that make the difference between a machine that lasts 15 years in a commercial setting and one that fails after two.
To understand how an exercise bike works, begin with the pedal crank. When a user pedals, they rotate the crank arm forward and back, typically in a circular motion (though some models use elliptical or other crank patterns). That rotational energy is transferred to a flywheel—a heavy wheel that continues spinning even after the pedal stroke is complete. The flywheel's mass and how quickly it spins create the sensation of momentum that a rider feels when pedaling.
