When you hold one in your hands, you are holding the result of a supply chain that began with raw paper pulp, chemical inks, photographic film, and a printing press, and passed through the hands of editors, printers, distributors, and retail outlet owners. The purpose of this chapter is to establish a working definition of this category that serves you in your professional or serious archival work: understanding what makes these magazines distinct from other print materials, how they were and are manufactured, how the supply chain functioned, and why the material characteristics of any given issue matter more than the subject matter when you are assigning value, planning storage, or assessing condition.

When a professional in the secondary market speaks of an erotic magazine, they do not refer to a category of subject matter only. The term describes a specific set of physical objects, usually periodicals, published at regular intervals, that feature explicit or suggestive photographic imagery as their primary content. This definition is broad but operationally precise: it excludes single-purpose books, photo portfolios sold as monographs, and films or digital media.
