An electric razor is a powered cutting instrument that uses rapid, controlled mechanical motion to sever facial hair at or near the skin surface. Unlike a manual blade razor, which relies on hand pressure and technique, an electric razor is a self-contained tool: a motor drives a cutting mechanism that repeats hundreds or thousands of times per minute, allowing the user to move the device across the face with minimal skill and consistent results. For many professionals, businesses, and serious users, this is the primary appeal—speed, consistency, and reduced technique dependency. But electric razors are far more complex than the marketing suggests, and understanding how they actually work and why different designs suit different applications is essential for choosing the right tool and using it effectively.

Electric razors come in two fundamentally different mechanical designs: reciprocating and rotary. These are not cosmetic variants—they are entirely different approaches to the problem of cutting hair, and each has distinct advantages and tradeoffs that professionals need to understand.

Reciprocating razors use a motor that drives one or more thin metal foils (typically stainless steel) back and forth hundreds of times per minute. Beneath each foil is a stationary cutting blade with fine-tooth edges. Hair enters the foil through tiny perforations, and as the foil oscillates, the hairs are held in place long enough for the blade teeth to cut them off. The most common reciprocating configuration uses three foils arranged in a linear pattern across the shaving head.
