An electric guitar pickup is a transducer—a device that converts one form of energy into another. Specifically, it converts the physical motion of vibrating steel strings into an electrical signal that can be amplified and heard through a speaker. How Pickups Work: The Physical Principle
At their core, all pickups operate on a single electromagnetic principle: a moving conductor in a magnetic field induces an electrical current in a nearby coil of wire. In a guitar pickup, the "conductor" is a vibrating steel string, the "magnetic field" comes from a permanent magnet, and the "coil of wire" is wound around the magnet or positioned near it. When you pluck a string, it moves through that magnetic field, and the coil detects those movements as a small changing electrical voltage—a few millivolts at the peak of a note. That voltage is sent to your amplifier, which boosts it to levels high enough to drive a speaker.
