Effects processors are tools that modify audio signals in time or frequency. They take an input signal, apply a transformation (reverb, delay, compression, filtering, distortion, modulation), and output the result. In that basic sense, they are as fundamental to modern audio work as microphones or mixing consoles. Yet the term "effects processor" covers an enormous range: a single hardware unit that does only reverb, a plug-in that models a tape delay, a multi-effects rack that includes compression, EQ, and modulation all at once, even a smartphone app that adds echo to your voice. This chapter focuses on what ties them together, how they fit into real audio chains, and why understanding them matters for anyone working with sound.

To ground this in a concrete situation: imagine you're recording vocals in a studio. The singer is in a booth with a microphone, and the signal travels down an XLR cable to your mixing console. At the console, you have access to effects processors—either external hardware units (connected via send/return) or software plug-ins (running inside your DAW). The singer's voice arrives at the console as a dry, unprocessed signal. You send a portion of that signal to a reverb processor, which adds ambience. You send another portion to a delay, which creates repetition. You blend the wet signals (the reverb and delay output) back with the dry vocal.
