Chapter 1: Understanding Educational Software
Educational software is software designed to facilitate learning, measure it, or both. This sounds obvious, but it is not. The distinction matters because educational software operates under a specific set of constraints that do not apply to consumer applications or general business tools. A spreadsheet is not educational software, even if it is used in a classroom. A video conferencing platform is not educational software, even if teachers use it to teach. Educational software is purpose-built to handle the actual mechanics of learning: presenting material in structured sequences, adapting to different learner needs, measuring knowledge acquisition, tracking progress over time, and storing information about what learners know.
Why does this distinction exist? Because learning itself has properties that other human activities do not. Learning is non-linear. A student who struggles with fractions may excel at algebra if the prerequisites are taught differently. A 45-year-old returning to school has different cognitive load and time constraints than an 18-year-old. Some people learn by reading; others by watching; others by doing. Educational software is built to acknowledge and respond to these facts, where a general-purpose tool does not.
Educational software also operates under regulatory constraints that other software does not. Schools, universities, and training organizations that use this software must comply with student privacy laws (FERPA in the United States, GDPR in Europe, equivalent regulations elsewhere).
