Every earmuff is a simple machine with a simple purpose: it places a barrier between your ear and a sound field. That barrier reduces the amount of acoustic energy that reaches your eardrum, and this reduction is what professionals refer to as attenuation. But the simplicity of the device hides a surprising amount of engineering. A good earmuff is not just a cup over your ear. It is an acoustic seal, a spring mechanism, a damping system, and a comfort system, all working together, and understanding how these parts function is the first step to buying, fitting, and maintaining earmuffs that actually work.
Consider the context in which earmuffs operate. A worker standing near a large industrial press might be exposed to 95 decibels (dB) of continuous noise. A hunter firing a rifle generates a peak sound pressure level over 160 dB, which is not merely loud but physically damaging in an instant.
