DVDs and video media remain in active use across industries that most people assume have abandoned physical formats entirely. Corporate training departments still manufacture thousands of training DVDs annually. Film archives rely on pressed DVDs as part of multi-format preservation strategies. Rental operations maintain DVD inventories in the tens of thousands. Educational institutions distribute video content on disc where bandwidth constraints or offline access requirements make physical media necessary. Content creators, video post-production shops, and broadcast facilities work routinely with video files encoded to DVD specifications or authored to physical disc.

Understanding DVDs and videos—the physical media, the file formats, how they function, and why they persist—begins with a concrete fact: these are not single products but two overlapping categories often confused with each other.

The Physical DVD and What It Actually Stores

A DVD is a physical disc: 120 millimeters in diameter (or 80mm for smaller variants), typically 1.2 millimeters thick, made of polycarbonate plastic with reflective metal layers. Data is encoded as microscopic pits and lands on the disc surface—patterns that a laser in a DVD drive reads as binary information. A standard DVD-Video holds up to 4.7 gigabytes of data on one side; a dual-layer DVD holds roughly 8.5 gigabytes. The disc itself is inert; it contains no power source, no circuits, no moving parts. It is readable only when a drive mechanically rotates it and aims a laser at its surface.

This physical simplicity is also its strength and weakness.
