The Physical Reality of the Format
A DVD is a polycarbonate disc, 120 millimeters in diameter and 1.2 millimeters thick, onto which digital data is encoded as microscopic pits and lands read by a laser. A Blu-ray disc is the same physical form factor but uses a shorter wavelength laser (blue instead of red) to read data encoded at much higher density—roughly five to ten times the storage capacity. Both formats layer data in spiral tracks across the disc surface; both can hold single-layer or dual-layer versions. The key point: the format is not digital in the abstract sense. It is a manufactured object that degrades. The polycarbonate substrate yellows, the reflective layer oxidizes, and the adhesive layers can delaminate. A Blu-ray disc stored in a cool, dark environment may remain readable for 50 years or longer; one exposed to heat and humidity may fail in 5 to 10 years.
