Chapter 1: Understanding Drywall Anchors

A drywall anchor is a fastening device that transfers the weight of a suspended object from a hollow cavity (the space inside a wall) to the drywall material itself, and ultimately to the wall studs or structure behind it. It is not a fastener in the traditional sense. A nail or screw works through direct penetration and friction. An anchor works by converting the force applied to it into a distributed load across a wider area of material—typically by mechanical expansion, embedment, or toggle action—so that the weak material (drywall) can support a weight it otherwise could not.

To understand why anchors exist and why their design matters, you must first understand the problem they solve. Drywall—the gypsum panel that covers most interior walls in modern construction—is a composite of gypsum core bonded with kraft paper facing. It is strong enough in compression and bending across its 5/8-inch or 1/2-inch thickness. But perpendicular to the wall, its tensile strength is poor. If you screw a fastener directly into drywall without an anchor, the fastener will pull through under load because the gypsum around it fractures and crumbles. The weight simply tears the material apart. A small picture frame might not create enough force to cause failure. A 50-pound mirror will. A mounted television or floating shelf with books will definitely pull through.
