Chapter 1: Understanding Dryers

A dryer is a machine that removes moisture from fabrics using heat and air movement. In principle, this is simple: wet fabric goes in, heat is applied, moist air is expelled, and dry fabric comes out. In practice, the method of generating and moving that heat, where the moist air goes, and how much time the process takes define the entire machineโ€”and they determine whether a dryer is practical for your space, how much it costs to operate, how long it lasts, and whether it meets your actual drying requirements.

To understand why these differences matter, start with the fundamental physics. Fabric holds moisture in two ways: as liquid water trapped in fibers, and as water vapor bound to the fiber material itself. Heat does the work of releasing both. When you apply heat to wet fabric, the liquid water evaporates, turning into vapor. Simultaneously, that vapor must be moved away from the fabric and out of the dryer drum, or it will recondense on the fibers and prevent further drying. This is why all dryers, regardless of type, combine two functions: heat generation and air circulation. No dryer can dry fabric with heat alone; it must move the moisture-laden air out of the drum and replace it with drier air. How it does this is where dryer types diverge.
