It is a precision instrument designed to apply a specific rotational force, called torque, to a square-headed tension rod, which then pulls a metal hoop down onto a drumhead. Without a properly fitted drum key, you cannot tension a drum head evenly, and you risk damaging the drum's lug casing, the tension rod, or the hoop itself.
