Chapter 1: Understanding Drill Chucks
A drill chuck is a clamping device that holds a cutting tool, usually a drill bit, in the spindle of a machine. The machine might be a handheld power drill, a drill press, a lathe, a milling machine, or a robotic arm on an automated assembly line. In every case, the chuck's job is the same: to hold the bit rigidly on the spindle's centerline so that all the machine's power and speed go into the cut, not into fighting a wobbling bit.
The core mechanism is deceptively simple. A cylindrical outer body contains three or, less commonly, four jaws. These jaws are arranged around the center and move inward and outward simultaneously. As they close onto a cylindrical bit shank, they center it automatically. The simultaneous movement is what defines a self-centering chuck, and it is the single feature that separates a true drill chuck from a simpler holder like a collet. You will sometimes see a two-jaw chuck on older tools, but they are rare to the point of being obsolete. Three jaws are standard because they are the minimum number that self-center a circle reliably. The jaws are driven by a threaded ring or scroll plate inside the body. When you rotate the outer sleeve, you rotate the scroll plate, which moves the jaws. This is the same mechanical principle used in a three-jaw lathe chuck, just scaled down and adapted for a cutting tool.
