A drain liner is a flexible tube, usually made from felt, fiberglass, or flexible plastic composite, that is inserted into a damaged or deteriorated drain pipe and then hardened or sealed in place to create a new, watertight interior surface. It does not replace the outer pipe structure; it sits inside it, relining the interior to stop leaks, prevent root intrusion, and restore flow capacity. The liner itself is typically 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick, but the critical difference between liners and simple patches is that a liner provides structural and hydrological continuity along the entire length of the damaged section, not just at a single rupture or hole.
The core reason drain liners exist is economic and practical: excavating a drain line to replace it entirely is disruptive, expensive, and often impossible without tearing up concrete, pavement, landscaping, or interior finished spaces. A typical sewer line replacement can cost $10,000 to $50,000 or more depending on depth, length, and the terrain above it. A drain liner, by contrast, typically costs 40 to 60 percent of full replacement and requires no excavation beyond access points.
