A door knocker is a mechanical device mounted on a door or door frame that allows visitors to announce their presence by striking a resonant surface. Unlike a doorbell, which relies on electrical components and wiring, a knocker is entirely mechanical—it requires no power, produces sound through direct mechanical impact, and functions reliably regardless of weather, power outages, or technological change. Despite this simplicity, knockers represent far more than decorative hardware: they are functional gatekeepers that affect accessibility, building code compliance, user experience, and the long-term performance of an entry system.
Understanding door knockers begins with understanding the basic mechanical principle that governs all knockers: a hinged or suspended handle (called a knocker head, ring, or bar) pivots on a fixed mounting point, strikes a stationary striking surface (the strike plate or keeper), and the impact produces an audible sound. The handle returns to its resting position through gravity or a restoring spring. That simple mechanism—pivot, strike, sound, return—has remained essentially unchanged for centuries, across thousands of design variations. What changes is the material, the pivot mechanism, the shape and mass of the striking component, the striking surface, and the decorative form around that basic function.
The reason this matters in practice is that each of those variables affects whether a knocker actually works reliably in a specific building context. A heavy bronze lion-head knocker with a loose pivot will create excessive vibration and may eventually crack a wooden door frame from repeated impact stress.
