A door knob or handle is a mechanical interface. Its primary function is simple: to transmit force from a hand or object to a latch or bolt mechanism, thereby controlling access to a space and managing the security of that space. But this apparent simplicity masks a set of engineering decisions, material choices, and installation requirements that determine whether the hardware will function reliably for decades or fail within months.

Consider the difference between a residential door knob and a commercial one. Both open the same way, but a residential knob in a family home might be gripped a few thousand times a year—mornings, evenings, occasional guests. A commercial knob on an office building entrance might receive fifty thousand actuations annually: employees, visitors, deliveries, security personnel, maintenance staff. That difference in use intensity, compounded by environmental exposure (salt air near a coast, heavy cleaning chemicals in a hospital, extreme temperature swings in a loading dock), creates entirely different performance requirements. A hardware choice that seems reasonable in residential context becomes inadequate or wasteful in commercial context.

Door knobs and handles are also regulatory objects. Building codes specify minimum requirements for emergency egress hardware—which doors must have panic bars, which must be lever-operated (easier for people with limited grip strength), which must meet fire safety standards.
