A door bell or chime is a signaling device that alerts occupants to a visitor or delivery at an entrance. It consists of three basic components: a button or sensor at the door, a transmission mechanism (either physical wiring or wireless signal), and a speaker unit inside that produces a sound, buzzer, or musical tone. The simplest version is a mechanical bell operated by a push button. Modern versions range from basic electromechanical chimes powered by a low-voltage transformer to sophisticated wireless systems with video, smartphone alerts, and multiple zone coverage.

Why this matters: most people treat a door bell as a simple commodity purchase, but the electrical infrastructure you choose at installation time determines whether the system will work reliably, whether it can be upgraded later, and whether additional entry points can be added without expensive rewiring. A builder or facility manager who selects the wrong power source or chime type for the building's existing wiring will face either immediate installation failure, poor audio performance, or costly remediation. Understanding how these systems work prevents those mistakes.

How Hardwired Systems Work

The majority of door bells and chimes in the United States are hardwired systems powered by a low-voltage transformer. Here is the basic circuit: an AC transformer, usually rated 16V or 24V, is wired into the building's electrical panel.
