Dock cleats are structural fasteners designed to secure a vessel to a fixed structure. They are not cosmetic hardware. A cleat's failure—whether through material fracture, bolt loosening, piling damage, or corrosion—can result in vessel loss, property damage, personal injury, or liability claims running into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Most waterfront facility managers and boat owners, however, purchase cleats the way they might buy a door hinge: based on appearance, price, and the casual assumption that all cleats perform the same way. This assumption is wrong, and it is costly.
Understanding dock cleats requires understanding the specific, measurable conditions they must withstand. A cleat does not simply hold a rope. It is a load-bearing component that must resist dynamic forces—the push and pull of wind, current, tidal swing, vessel motion, and docking impact—over extended periods of time, often in corrosive environments. A recreational sailboat secured in a freshwater marina experiences different stresses than a commercial fishing vessel in saltwater, which experiences different stresses than a barge subject to heavy tidal currents.
