Chapter 1: Understanding DJ & Specialty Audio
DJ and specialty audio is not a product category you buy off a shelf and plug in. It is a system for converting recorded or synthesized sound into a controlled, amplified acoustic event in a real physical space. Whether you are playing a four-hour set in a 200-capacity club, providing ceremony music at a wedding, or installing a permanent system in a performing arts center, you are building a signal chain. Every piece of equipment in that chain does one of three things: it sources the audio, it processes and mixes the audio, or it amplifies and reproduces the audio. Understanding how these three stages interact is the foundation of every decision you will make as a user or a buyer of this gear.
Consider a basic mobile DJ rig. A laptop running DJ software is a source, generating a line-level audio signal. A DJ mixer is a processor, allowing you to blend, cut, and apply equalization to two or more sources. An amplifier is a power stage, taking the mixer's weak signal and increasing its voltage and current to drive a speaker. The speaker is the final transducer, converting electrical energy into acoustic energy. If any link in this chain is mismatched, the system will not perform to its potential. A $2,000 loudspeaker connected to a low-quality amplifier with unbalanced cables will sound thin, hum, and may clip before it reaches any usable volume. This book is about avoiding those mistakes.
