A diving regulator is a mechanical device that takes pressurized air stored in a tank at 200 bar or higher and delivers it to a diver at whatever pressure surrounds them at depth. Without it, a diver breathing directly from a pressurized tank would experience rapid pressure changes in the lungs, rapid expansion of gases as they ascend, and physical damage to lung tissue. The regulator solves this problem by stepping down high pressure to breathable pressure in two stages—first at the tank connection, then again at the diver's mouth.
