Chapter 1: Understanding Dividers

A divider is a precision handheld instrument consisting of two legs joined at a pivot point, used to mark, measure, and transfer distances in layout, marking, and precision work. One leg terminates in a sharp needle; the other leg may also be a needle, or a marking point, or a compass pencil or scribe, depending on the type and application. By adjusting the distance between the needle points and the pivot, a user can establish any distance within the divider's range and transfer that distance across a workpiece, a drawing, or reference edges with high accuracy.

In practice, dividers are found in nearly every shop where precision matters: the machinist uses one to mark centerlines and hole locations on steel stock before drilling; the tool-and-die maker uses one to verify exact distances between features during layout; the draftsperson uses one to mark or verify distances on technical drawings; the fabricator uses one to transfer a critical dimension from an engineer's blueprint to sheet metal or aluminum stock. Woodworkers use dividers for layout on wood and for marking equal divisions across boards. In quality-control work, inspectors sometimes use dividers as a rapid visual check that a hole or edge is where it should be within a tolerance band.
