Chapter 1: Understanding Dive Computers

A dive computer is a self-contained instrument that measures ambient pressure and, in most cases, water temperature, then uses that data to calculate and display nitrogen or helium loading in your tissues, current depth, elapsed bottom time, and safe ascent rates. It is not a timer. It is not a depth gauge in the analog sense. It is a real-time physiological calculator that interprets pressure and temperature to model how inert gas accumulates in your body during descent and must be eliminated during ascent.

This distinction matters operationally because it determines what the dive computer is actually telling you and why its readings are not optional—they represent the result of mathematical models built on decades of decompression physiology research. When your dive computer displays a maximum ascent rate of 9 meters per minute, or a no-decompression limit of 18 minutes at your current depth, or a mandatory decompression stop at 5 meters, those numbers are outputs of an algorithm working from pressure and temperature inputs in real time. They are not suggestions. They are the dive computer's interpretation of what your tissues can tolerate.
