Understanding how disease actually works is the foundation of effective disease control.

Disease control is the practice of preventing, slowing, or eliminating plant disease in a way that protects yield, quality, appearance, or longevity. It's not a single product. It's a system of decisions: how you prepare soil, manage water, choose varieties, apply treatments, monitor for problems, and adjust your practices based on what you observe. A fungicide spray is one tool. A resistant variety is another. Proper air circulation is a third. Effective disease control usually combines several of these approaches, selected because they address the specific pathogen causing the problem under the conditions present in your operation.

To understand why some growers have healthy plants season after season while others struggle with persistent disease, you need to know three things: what causes disease, how disease develops, and which interventions actually interrupt that process.

What Causes Plant Disease

Plant disease is caused by pathogens—living organisms that infect plant tissue and damage it in ways that reduce health, yield, or quality. The main categories are fungi, bacteria, viruses, and less commonly, nematodes or oomycetes. Each pathogen type requires different approaches to control.
