Unlike a general-purpose computer that multitasks across many applications, a DVR's architecture, operating system, and hardware are optimized around this single workflow. Why DVRs Are Not General-Purpose Computers
The most common misconception about digital video recorders is that they are simply computers running video recording software. In practice, many DVRs—especially in professional security and broadcast contexts—are purpose-built systems where the hardware, firmware, and software are tightly integrated. The processor, memory, storage controller, and video input/output interfaces are selected and tuned specifically for video ingestion and storage, not for general computing tasks.
