A desk is a working platform, but that simple description hides the fact that it is a precision piece of engineering and materials science. Whether it is a four-legged flat top from a big-box store or a height-adjustable model with a laminate top and a steel subframe, every desk is a system of interacting parts: a surface that must bear static and dynamic loads, columns or legs that transfer weight to the floor, fasteners that hold everything under tension, and joints that resist racking and sway.
